...which kind of brings me back to my point that a nice, blue, dripping, bloody steak is a far better way to get your protein than some freeze-dried white egg powder with added god-knows-whats.
The issue has never been 'is protein useful' it is 'are protein SUPPLEMENTS NECESSARY'
Sorry for the capitals, I'm not shouting, but until we get italics it's the only way to emphasize....

Indeed Slowboy, and EXACTLY the point I was trying to make earlier! Weather you get your protein from steak or pulses, nuts and the like is irrelevant. I draw the line at drinking water with whey powder and the like...

I personally like to fuel myself on a good veggie curry with dahl before a race and love a stir fry with loads of cashews after a race or hard training session...

I think protein supplements (i.e. whey protein shakes and the like) are the best way of getting a serious amount of protein without having to eat vast amounts of food.
E.g. when I get back from a hard workout I don't REALLY want to eat a coupole of chicken breasts in the 20 mins straight after... but I don't mind a protein shake or recovery shake with protein and electrolytes/carbs in (e.g. Recovermax)

Han - my point is the timing of the protein. For recovery and muscle building/repair purposes it's important to get that protein soon after (or maybe as Steve said earlier, towards the end of) your workout.

freeze dried egg whites? those are some posh supplements Most use Whey which would just get flushed away or used as animal feed until somebody came up with the 'proof' that it's the ideal protein for muscle repair. Just like Maltodextrin is best for quick carbs even though it's only advantage over pure glucose is that it's available cheaply even though it can contain crap like MSG and gluten making it unsuitable for some people.
The research tends to support the products that can be produced cheaply and sell for a massive markup, odd that isn't it?

These things are so very personal... when I get back from a hard run/ride/race I usually head streight for the kitchen and start putting some food on (like boil rice/dahl) so it cooks while I am stretching... I'd have dahl and rice and veggies for breakfast, if it did not mean getting up a lot earlier

That could be the reason why you don't need to keep feeding on the bike Hanneke. You already carbo load.
