my pool is 12.5m wide so could do 3 or 4 lanes (at a push) but they are lazy and have only ever done 2!

Bike in LBS as he forgot to tell me I could collect Tuesday (my early finish) and I can't get there until Saturday (tomorrow if we can finish early)

Talking of bikes - how much benefit would I get from going off road on old 5 gear hybrid?

I only have 1 road bike and won't be getting another before that gets suggested!

Off road, depends on how technical. If you are riding a gravel trail then riding is riding :-)

Before I got my wattbike I had a separate (cheap) wheel with a turbo tyre on it so that I could quickly swap and use my bike outside if I wanted to. Turbo tyre is essential if you're planning to work hard. As the PoD says.
