Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I'm with you guys. The appeal for me is that running is simple. You have one aim to go from A to B. Totally stress free.

I used to run with music years back when I was little more than a beginner and still at the stage when I was reluctant to run with others (too self-conscious), and slow enough to find I got a bit tired and bored on my longer runs. I used to take the headphones out if I had to run in the road as opposed to on pavement. I've never worn them in a race - in all my first races I had Mr AL alongside me anyway. I stopped wearing them when I re-started running following a few months off for injury - the batteries in my mp3 player (that's how long ago it was!) were dead, I found I didn't miss the music at all, as tonyp says, I like tuning into the environment, including the sound of my own footfalls and breathing. I know that some of my beginner runners do use music on their solo runs - we request that they do without in group runs. I feel that learning to feel confident about running alone is an important step - and if music helps then so be it. I had more of a battle with two male runners this winter over hi-viz - they kept 'forgetting' until I had to threaten them with bright pink tabards :)

Whilst I agree with the ban in race environments for the sake of safety for hearing both other runners and marshalls, I can't see why on training runs or supposed non-competitive events there would be an issue as whilst for some people (myself included), the silence of running away from technology is a nice break, some people will see it as their only time to listen to music or find songs of a similar tempo to help their pace. It's their choice in these cases and if that's what they enjoy then so be it.

But seriously, where did Spurs finish HOD? ;)

It's actually a rare opportunity I have to listen to language learning MP3s or podcasts in other languages. Much of my running at the moment is "me-time". If it's a proper race, though, I wouldn't.

Liverpool Rock n Roll races not "enforcing" headphone rule, due to the "motivational power" of music.
Are they in breach of the rules?

"There are many sections of the RnR Liverpool course where runners are in a closed road lane, but the adjacent lane is separated by traffic cones and open to vehicles. The wearing of headphones in such areas is now prohibited under UK Athletics rules 240 S5. As a race organiser affiliated to UK Athletics we are bound by the rules of racing and headphones are therefore prohibited. However we do recognise the motivational power that music provides and have arranged a line-up of over 50 of Liverpool’s best bands to entertain you around the course.

We will not be instructing officials to enforce this rule strictly by implementing disqualifications, but you should be aware that you will be in breach of UK Athletics rules and are running at your own risk. We will however enforce UKA rules which state runners can be disqualified for not following the instructions of a race official – this includes stewards controlling the flow of traffic and runners, and marshals at controlled crossing points."
