The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free.
But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient.
Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead.
Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?
Off to watch Brighton v Palace this evening, full of trepidation given our respective form and seasons so far.
Here’s a video exposing the root of the animosity between the two clubs. The important thing to know is that it’s not a derby and it’s got nothing to do with the M23.
True. It began in the 70s when Palace were managed by Venables and Brighton by Mullery. The two had been teammates at Spurs and didn’t really get on. One season they played each other five times. Twice in the league and a twice replayed cup game. Palace came out eventual winners, being on the right side of some dubious refereeing decisions. Mullery had a meltdown, and got a drink chucked over him by a Palace supporter. He responded by sticking two fingers up at the crowd and chucking a handful of change down saying “you’re not with that.”*
After that there was always an extreme level of animosity on and off the pitch. Leg-breaking tackles, Boxing Day battles, sendings-off and penalties galore. Two seasons later Palace would win the final game of the season to win the second division title, taking it away from Brighton.
*Ron Noades would later appoint Mullery as our manager. You can imagine how went down. Despite the shambles of Mark Goldberg’s ownership and a second administration, the Mullery Years were very much the nadir of our existence.
They are the closest league club to us (well, until Crawley came into the league). And the distance between the two is less than that between Norwich and Ipswich.
Ah, the beautiful game, remember that? Let's put down some jumpers and have a socially-distanced kickabout. Long shots only, and no hugging and kissing.
