Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Office 2021 does not have all the functions of Office 365, however it does have Dynamic Array Functions and Spill features. This means instead of using PivotTables, you can use functions to build the groups, much simpler cascading data validation + more. Nerdy like from me :)

Many companies are also integrating CoPilot (M'softs AI) into their apps. Just reminds me of Mr Clippy with a modern take. Anyway gives ChatGPT competition.

Can you find out what the DLLs are that are required for your recorder? (normally says which DLL is missing in the error). Then check to see if it is on your PC. If it is there maybe can try running RegSvr32 to re-register it?

The HD versions on the Humax are most likely encrypted to work only on the machine that has stored them, whereas the SD res versions have no encryption. When Freeview HD was introduced it was part of the spec to avoid effectively Blu-Ray quality content being easily ripped / copied.

Which Humax is it? I've got the "aura" which is on paper brilliant, but got launched and then never really developed. But I can (when I can be bothered) transfer the SD versions of recordings onto a laptop.

(I have a long history with digital STBs; I bought the first FTA digital stb that was launched in the UK (Pace DTVA) and then had a fantastic Thomson DHD4000 HDD recording box which I modded to have an output port so I could download BBC programming onto DVD without any loss of quality or reprocessing to create "Something Special" DVDs for my son at the time. When that died I was very sorry, but it couldn't handle the new HD formats, so bought a startup company's device which promised a lot on paper, and worked fine until an update basically killed it. Then had a lovely EE branded recorder which could record up to 4 things simultaenously and also record I think 7 or 8 channels simultaneously on a rolling 24 hour basis, so I could skip back into yesterday evenings programming without having to rely on iPlayer or similar. The Aura that I've got now is great, but has quirks. And it seems increasingly hard to find recording STBs which good features as the move is obviously towards "on demand" services; but I'd always prefer to record programmes, especially if they are on commercial channels, so I can skip the ads easily!)

Suspect the copy protection here is the biggest issue for you; there's no great source of info out there of users copying across from Humax devices and getting them to play. But if you find a way, let me know :-)

run free - yes I had the names, and no, they aren't on my laptop. Not after re-installing office, photos and MS Visual ++C, which is where the web (and MS) said they'd be. I wasn't going to trust the variety of web sites offering me the chance to download them. None of them looked too reputable.

larkim - I have a Humax FVP 5000T, and I suspect you're right, ie it's a proprietary lock or encryption. Nothing on Humax site (that I could find) that gave any resolution either.

Yep, if its the terrestrial one then I'm 99.99% certain that they are DRM locked. It's funny, because once upon a time we were perfectly happy with the resolution that the SD files have! Now we've all got mahoosive TVs (well, compared to what we were happy with when they weren't flat screens) they just look grainy / blocky.

I may have to play around and see if there's any way to play an HD recording to the TV and re-record what's playing in SD.

Can the box not downscale to SD? The Aura does that, if you record something in HD but want to watch it on say a phone in the kitchen the Aura app allows you to select it to convert to "downloadable format" which effectively means that it stores a MPEG2 version at SD resolution on the box as well as the HD version. So you can either stream it via the app, download it via the app to the phone or use the network connectivity of the box to grab the SD file through one of a few file transfer routes.

Good idea larkim, thanks!
But I can't find anything.
The phone app shows the file, but just says 'unplayable'
And the device itself iill copy, but won't decrypt or condense.

Update - Of the 10 recordings I really wanted to keep a copy of (Tokyo 2021), 9 are mpeg, so I can copy those. Windows Media Player won't play sound on them, but Clipchamp does. Just takes ages to load, and I've worked out how to edit to just the clips I want. It's taken all day for the first of the 9 !
But all the rest are copied onto laptop and shortly into the cloud, so secured.

In future, I'll know to record in SD and copy and edit sooner.
Or stream direct on the laptop and use gamebar to record from there.

Unless there's a change in technology on newer recorders? Or any laptop based direct recorders?

I think we live in an on-demand, copy protected world so wouldn't expect recording from TV signal will be much of a thing in a few years.
