Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

“It is really exciting. I don’t know of any way of counting eels, perhaps we should launch a competition for someone to design an eel counter.

[I was slightly involved in a project helping Korean Eel farmers use the internet of things to automate lots of their daily work - checking how big the eels were, water temperature, cleanliness, food levels etc. Fairly sure the problem of counting eels has been solved :-) ]

Significant numbers of marathon runners show highly raised levels of Troponin T, which is a marker used to determine if someone has had a heart attack. This has lead to reports of marathon/ultra running causing heart damage. However, unlike after a heart attack, in affected athletes the Troponin level tends to quickly return to normal. Endurance cyclists and triathletes do not seem to be affected in the same way. Additionally, better trained runners are less affected.

Yeah, I’ve read about that. IIRC there is an increased risk of heart attack for some time after the event. Where’s Velociraptor?

From the Times obituary of Scott Walker:

"The first sign of his new experimentation came in the unlikely form of a Walker Brothers reunion album. Nite Flights (1978) contains The Electrician, a dark if beautiful piece of mood music about a CIA torturer. From then on he went ever deeper into the shadowy recesses of his psyche, pulling his voice into increasingly dramatic shapes on his way there. Tilt (1995) is the kind of bleak masterpiece you really only need listen to once a year. By The Drift (2006) he was using cuts of raw meat as percussion instruments."

Tim Harford was written something similar, I will try to dig it up.

Hummus recipe:

Proper hummus is served with a drizzle of olive oil, rather than oil being a significant ingredient in its own right. This is what should go in it:

• 1½ cups cooked chickpeas or 1 (15-ounce) canned chickpeas, drained and rinsed*
• 3 tablespoons tahini
• 3 tablespoons lemon juice
• 1 garlic clove, mashed
• ¼ teaspoon salt, or more to taste
• Approximately 2-4 tablespoons room-temperature water or aquafaba, or more if needed
• Optional garnishes: extra virgin olive oil, sumac or paprika, finely chopped parsley or other herbs, whole chickpeas

This particular recipe from thymeandtoast.com but it’s typical of the Middle Eastern way of making it.
