Her version of Don't Cry for me, Argentina is achingly good, too |

...and sounds autobiographical in her rendition, such is the power of the performance. Many of the lyrics surely apply to her.... "so I chose freedom, running around trying everything new, but nothing impressed me at all. I never expected it to... ...and as for fortune and as for fame, I never invited them in, though it seemed to the world they were all I desired. They are illusions, they're not the solutions they promised to be. The answer was here all the time." |

Oscar the Grouch I think your assessment makes good sense - and hearing her backed by an orchestra reveals another aspect of her talent: a big, wide ranging performance. What is rather less than surprising is is considerable swell in the appreciation of O'Connor's work post mortem. Maybe that's simply 'the way of things' in popular music these days - fortunately, her valuable legacy is so accessible to us.

What I was surprised by in that recording was the somewhat muted reaction of the audience, but maybe that's just the zeitgeist. Agree that she's perhaps 'more' appreciated in death than life. I certainly remember thinking that she was - being directed to think that she was - a bit mad. Yet all of the things she was outing were true and she was just way ahead of the curve.

You've reminded me of a lyric from a 'James' song, 'Sit Down': 'Those who find they're touched by madness. Sit down next to me. Those who find themselves ridiculous. Sit down next to me...' However, it's down to the image makers to decide how to project an artist for maximum gain and £££ $$$. In the heat of runaway success, it's far more difficult to 'know' the true artist. Perhaps Don McLean's 'Vincent' gets close to why Sinead struggled so hard to find her place: 'This world was never meant for one As beautiful as you.' |

I watched the documentary “Nothing compares to you” yesterday. I hadn’t been aware of much that went on in Sinead’s life; it really shook me how terribly badly a lot of people treated her. What an incredible woman she was.
