Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

The point of a park is to be used. You can't selectively charge one group of people. That is the way of the NIMBY twat.

I don't think it's possible to take at face value the parish councils assertion that parkrunners cause damage. It does sound like a small handful of parish councillors have got a complete misunderstanding of parkrun and its finances and have just gone down the wrong path.

Whatever the outcome of their meetings today, the relationship between the parish council and the parkrunners will be damaged, possibly irreparably so.

Cambridge parkrun is in a park that South Cambs council hived off to a private operator some time back because it was too expensive for the council to maintain.

The operator raises money from parkrunners in that they charge £2 for parking, but the same charge applies to all park users.

I would think charging for parking would be a good solution to enable parkruns to remain free.

McGoohan, at a local parkrun venue the council charges for use of the football pitches - the local league fund it from subs - I don't see any difference. It's a non-public body appropriating a public space for free.

I wonder if parkrun does save the health service ay money - what about the inevitable injuries, physio referrals etc? There was an interesting thing on QI (I think - just heard the theme tune in the background so it could be a pavlovian response) where ever so many people took part in a sky dive to raise funds for the local hospital. Each paid £30 (minimum) to jump, but the bill for treatment was into the 10s if not 100s of thousands for the broken ankles sustained.

Football pitch hire includes the use of changing rooms, showers, maintenance of pitches (line painting, etc) and exclusive use of the pitches. A run around a park requires none of these things, it has no cost to the council. The comparison is flawed. The path is not appropriated, it's shared freely as parks are suppose to be.

How many runners see NHS physios? Everyone I know go straight to see private physios and thus boosts the local economy!

Charging for parking is the obvious solution.
