Hi all, I am officially rubbish at fuelling for and during a marathon.
I struggle to eat and run, yesterday I did 27miles & survived on a handful of haribos (3-4 sweets every 3.3m lap) as well as 2 shotbloks and a piece of homemade date oat & nut bars (it was a tiny piece) on the run... I just cant do it....
Pre run yesterday I had a crumpet and greek yoghurt with berries and granola. When I did Darkskies last year as it is an evening run I had a sweet jacket potato, feta and salad for lunch, I took things to snack on throughout but struggled and stopped eating at 14miles what I did have was the aforementioned date, oat and nut bar cut into tiny pieces and maybe 3 shotbloks.
I have my next marathon (Kielder Darkskies) in 4 weeks. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Sounds to me like you had quite a lot to eat on that 27 mile run! I usually have a few jelly babies and kendal mint cake every 10k in marathons (may grab a gel if on offer) tho I'm not out there for as long as you...
Important to be well fed the day or two before (even for a evening race). I always have a hearty breakfast even right before a 9am marathon, luckily I have no problems running on a fairly full stomach.

What exactly do you struggle with ? Is that that you can't chew solids as you have a very dry mouth, or that you get stomach cramps if you eat, or what ?
If you can't take solids, and assume you've tried gels, can you get your calories in liquid form using one of the powders that dissolve in water eg tailwind, etc ? This would mean mixing it up beforehand and carrying in softflasks or bladder, but as it looks like you are doing all offroad stuff then you probably already using a vest for carrying gear.

I ended up with High5 gels, the isotonic ones don't need water. The only way I could work it was to stick firmly to a schedule - one every 4 miles. I didn't question whether I needed them, just sipped slowly until each one was gone.

I don’t eat anything mom a run up to 14-15m only ever drink water on any length of run.
I find shotbloks are ok I don’t like gels but do carry one as an emergency.
I just lose all appetite when I exercise I don’t really eat extra before and it suppresses my appetite afterwards too.
I had 2-3 haribo sweets 2 shotblocks and literally an inch square piece of date bar, but I then don’t have any energy left in my legs to keep going so my pace crashes towards the end. You hear so much about fuelling and eating during a run so I guess I was interested on what was reasonable to do.
Thanks

Your pacing could be as much of an issue as fuelling if your pace begins to fall at the end of long runs.....hydration too?

This isn't about fuelling for a marathon in the traditional sense though is it? At a 6 hour activity this is more in ultra territory, irrespective of the distance? (Please don't take that as in any way a criticism of your pace - just that for everyone, being "on the go" for 6 hours I would expect is a different physiological experience than being "on the go" for 3-4 hours, so it might take a different nutrition approach).
I always make sure I get very well fuelled the day / night before, and then make myself eat well early on, though not so much as I would be exceeding what I can process.
