Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I'm using it now - getting used to the new look compared to using the main site via phone internet. Like the blogs and look of the threads. Just miss the following thread notification - only because going to the thread from that takes you to your last point.

This desktop display = 1920x1080
Work Laptop = ???? x 700 (low vertical resolution)

Mobile devices:
My 5 inch phone = 1080x1920
Wife's phone = 1080x1920
Child's 7 inch tablet = 1920 x 1200
My 10 inch tablet = 2560 x 1600

Wife's 10 inch tablet = 2560 x 1600

Mobile devices are all at least that of the desktop, if not greater. (More resolution on the desktop for me is a second screen :-) )

Keefy commented on the other thread:
Getting sites to size by device size is defo not a problem from yesterday. How you achieve that - mobile site, responsive web or app - is up to the people behind the site.

I do agree, it's frustrating when sites do not layout/resize well. My only point is that I find this MORE of an issue with the destop site than on mobile devices. These handle high detail well AND can rotate to portrait.
The destop site on the desktop has acres of wasted space either side. So much so that my prefence is to split the browser window to view the forum/training pages side by side using TileTabs plugin in Firefox.

Mobile is not the poor relation any more, indeed resolution is going up while the desktop has stagnated in general.

I like the idea of the mobile site and do use other sites versions as their normal websites don't interact well with my phone but as far as Fetch is concerned, I'm just too used to everything I can access on the normal site that this feels, weird.

I've no problem at all with folks continuing to use the desktop site on their mobiles, if that's their preference. I won't be automatically redirecting anyone to one version or the other - it's down to your own choice. There's a "visit the mobile version" link at the top of a lot of pages, but if you close that, it doesn't come back.

Google, however, will detect the device you're browsing with, and serve up pages from what it deems to be the appropriate version. Again, that's fine, because if you already know about Fetch, just stick it in your bookmarks, and you're never more than a click away from your favourite running website, in your favourite format. The stats show that the 'bounce rate' (that's people who arrive on the site from an external source, and then immediately leave again) is quite a bit higher for mobiles than for desktop (36% compared to 25%) - so it'll be interesting to see whether having the mobile version will make a difference. Google are certainly very keen on having mobile-friendly alternatives - to the extent that as of April 21st, they'll be penalising sites that don't have this option, by dropping them down their rankings, meaning a reduction in visitors.

As for screen resolutions, and desktops - yes, I think that desktops have been somewhat left behind in the race to fit websites into people's pockets. But responsive design is attempting to ensure that sites work well no matter what the device - and I feel like this is a good step forward for FE. Manpower is an issue, as it always is, but I know you lot know that :-)

I'll try to dig out some site-wide stats for screen resolution - but IMHO there are a significant number of viewers who benefit from having a simplified version of the site.

39% of viewers have a screen width that's less than 1000 pixels (which is the width of the desktop page).

Mobile version is lovely for me on my phone (some kind of Lumia). I've got fat fingers and bad eyesight so like the bigger buttons and jumbo font. Not having to constantly pan and zoom is great.

Games on mobile version would be lovely :)
