Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure I have just developed this and will be phoning surgery next week but just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar experience?

I haven't had a cold or anything, in fact I can't temember when I last had one even when all around me were coughing and sneezing! but my last three runs I have really struggled with my breathing. parkrun today I was breathing really heavily before I'd run a mile and had to take several walk breaks and the previous two were just social runs with the girls which I normally taken my stride but really struggled with. When I stop running my chest doesn't really feel tight but I have a bit of difficulty breathing normally for a few minutes then I am fine.

I have recently done two half marathons and a 10 miler with no bresthing problems during the race so this has come on quite quickly.

Any comments would be welcome - thank you.

Hiya - yeah I was diagnosed with this as well. Really struggled with my breathing last year until the doc put me on a steroid inhaler which I take twice a day. It made a huge difference. I found when I was running I was lethargic and couldnt breathe and when I finished I would always cough for a good 10 mins after. Definitely worth taking to the doc. Are you stressed about anything at present as this can also trigger it.

Yes same for me too. It is also possible you could have a low level chest infection that isn't manifesting as a cold, but temporarily interfering with your breathing capacity. My asthma nurse tells me that if its interfering with my ability to "live a normal life" including being active and exercising, then I need to get a review appointment.

I have this too. Mine is particularly bad in cold weather and better in the summer. Unless I use my inhaler, my chest is tight and my breathing is wheezy when I run and then I cough like a heavy smoker for hours afterwards

Another suggestion if it's come on recently it might be hayfever...I've had that come on at certain times of the year. There's a lot of pollen floating about at the moment.

I've also had the SusiesueH effect in cold weather when very hard running will result in me sounding like a heavy smoker! At the moment, I've just been recovering from a cold and it takes ages to get out of my chest...one of my friends who occasionally smokes has been teasing me about having smoker's cough!;)

Thanks folks. Don't think it's hay fever as would that not effect me when I am just out and about and not running? Cold weather hasn't been a problem up to now - I live NE Scotland so am used to running in pretty cold conditions! OH is just 4 weeks post-op so suppose stress might be a factor? He is also asthmatic, though well controlled and says my breathing problems after running sound pretty much like asthma so definitely will get it checked out.

My hayfever only really effects my breathing when I run, it's like it feels like it catches more. Does your OH have a peakflow you can borrow if he's asthmatic to test your airflow post-run and see if it's dipping? There's also quite a bit of pollution around at the moment that is triggering asthma (again these things seem to have more effect when excersising, but don't know if that would be a problem in NE Scotland)

Me too i generally struggle feb - may. I had an inhaler but now find anti hysts help just as well, very similar to PF. I also bought one of those breathing exerciser gadgets definitely helped.

I've not been running this year and I've had no breathing issues so it's definitely something that running triggers.

Having just finished the 2nd course of antibiotics for a chest infection, I seem to have been left with exercise induced bronchospasm. Will this get better or am I left with this? Has any one else had the same problem?

Aha - not just me then. I've had a dry cough for about six months now, which only shows itself when I'm running. Finally went to the GP, who suggested an inhaler to see if that fixes it, plus a chest X-ray just to rule out Bad Stuff...
