I too get the same...and it's even worse in colder weather with hard efforts.

We call it the middle distance cough - it can be quite hilarious after track races. I don't tend to get it from 5k and up unless I've set a massive pb.

Ian has had this for years, sounds like he's about to die sometimes and gets oddest looks from folk, he has inhaler for it but doesn't seem to help much. As folk have already said doc said exercise induced asthma

I too get "the cough" when it is cold outside and I've done intervals or a hard XC - it seems to be made worse when the air of a warm room hits me, but it's usually gone within a few hours / next morning.

First club run tonight with the aid of ventolin and what a difference! Breathing much better during my run and no coughing! :-):-):-)
