Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

When Mrs Fitz and I first met 30+ years ago, she was mad into all the soaps and I was forbidden to phone her when Emmerdale / Corrie / Stenders / Brookie were on. Over time she gave them all up except Brookie which we both enjoyed watching the omnibus, recorded on VHS on Saturday, watched on Sunday.

These days we watch BBC News at 10 pretty much every day; we record things we want to see on a Sky box and watch at our leisure; I'll have a Monday night veg-out to Mastermind, Only Connect and UC; we watch Spurs live games. Apart from that the TV is never on.

WFH, I'll put the radio on (6Music) from the start but often forget to turn back on after turning it off for a meeting and don't miss it. Mrs Fitz WFH in another room works in silence all day!

I pay for Sky (for the footie and for the ace Sky box recording functionality) and BT Sport; really don't think we get VFM from those but difficult to give up.

No interest in Netflix or any other streaming services, we wouldn't have the time to watch them.

My tv service (EE) is stopping soon. Whilst I can get on demand players from my TV I really like being able to record (and hence fast forward through ads etc), and also pause/rewind and go back to things that were on yesterday or earlier in the day (these days that’s often the news so I don’t have to watch it too late)

What boxes have people got that record or pause/rewind live telly?

Hubby taken TV watching to a whole new level today.

I am in the kit hen diner listening to my music which is not to his taste I've been pottening around doing bits.

He's making the roast today he's out his phone ontop of the microwave propped up by the egg basket with the TV playing on it!!! I can Feintly hear it!!!

Meglet- we have a virgin box which records I believe it transfers across both boxes (the kids use it all the time 🤣) but my understanding of these such devices is very limited hence this post lol

Ha ha! I can’t get virgin broadband here, and I guess best way would be a tv/broadband package. Without that it seems the record boxes are over £200.

We had sky a few years back that recorded as well. We've not ever had any of the other brand out there.

There's probably so many companies that offer this kind of thing

Not sure it counts but I have ditched all satellite and broadcast and watch only youtube and vimeo for TV replacement (and old DVDs). Ironically, Norway incorporated the TV licence into general taxation last year so I don't have a choice about that.

@meglet we had that brilliant EE service and have swapped to a Humax Aura digibox now. It's not as good as the EE box for the 24hour rewind but as everything that's been on the main channels is linked directly via the EPG to the online services like iPlayer or All4 etc we haven't lost out really.

And other features are good. It's not perfect not cheap but I'm happy with it!

Thanks Larkim. First person I’ve known who had EE! I chose it as I liked the features of a Sky box but didn’t want Sky when I moved house as it’s so expensive and I don’t watch it enough.

I can go through phases. If I've got a good book on the "go', that will always win but if not, I'll happily watch Antiques Roadshow, Salvage Hunters and travel programmes. Hubby loves his sport and is obsessed with Covid updates (the latter of which, thankfully, he tends to watch on his office tv!)

i seem to be going in the other direction. I hated the fact that on top of a TV licence, if we wanted to watch other things we increasingly had to pay for sky, sky sports, netflix, prime....

yet we've somehow ended up with both netflix and prime and sometimes we also pay a one-off to Now TV (AKA sky) for individual sporting events. But... over the past 6 months i've probably found more interesting things to watch (mainly action/dramas) on netflix and prime than on terrestial TV
