Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

The self centre in bury did a day's workshop for runners last summer, it was i think based on the chi way of running, we did lots of work on core stability and balance and looking at our bodies as a spindle rotating round a central axis and then went for a 3 mile run to practice and did that thing where you fall forward to start running, it was really good. I've still managed to get injured after doing this day though as I'm a bit forgetful and could probably do with a longer course and refreshers. I could well recommend it though. The instructor was really down to earth as well. They might let me know if they have any more coming up.

WP what i am going to do is focus on the body as a central needle and get my gait so I am landing under my cog. I am still a bit sore so will be doing maybe 2-3 miles stop start to get a feel for it. my body is a complete alien to me and I have trouble visualising where it is in space so I need plently of gentle tries to get it any where near right in my mind and then when I see myself on video I realise what a horrible trick my mind plays with me.

I guess my skiing instructor thing should help as after all all I see is bend the knees and get your weight forward (from the ankles)

I was not going to bother with the metronome as cadence is the determinant of pace, as you are always placing your mid foot on the ground under your body and letting gravity take you forward your stride length cannot change too much (that is how it protects) so the only way you can go faster is to turn over quicker.

So my plan is 2-3 miles at a slow pace (1st gear) and see what happens. Then I will go and stroke a Pony and hug a tree. I love the running on the spot drill - who needs a treadmill eh

Of course the danger is that when the book arrives I will have to restart all over again

Is there much difference between POSE and Chi running? I ordered the (very expensive) book and DVD for POSE several weeks ago, but cannot look at them until Wednesday, as my wife is giving them to me for my birthday. I hope I haven't chosen the wrong option. They both sounded quite similar to me - i.e fall forward and footstrike under you body.

AKAIK (and i stress my knowledge coems only from surfing the net) there is a fundamental difference in that pose is taught by linking to gether a number of static poses and all there drills are designed to perfect those static poses. Chi is a fluid motion taught as a motion first and foremost.

The practical difference is that POSe teaches ball of foot landing and letting ankle flexion absorb the shock whereas Chi teaches mid foot (ie over the arch landing and therefore does not allow the ankle to absorb some of the shock it all goes to the arch and to the knee.

What I can tell you is that the POSe rock back onto the ankle does stress calfs and achilles alot. Chi runners do not get the same stress here.

here is a thread from teh Chi forum - chirunning.com

Chi running books and DVDs are also cheaper

About This Thread

Maintained by fetcheveryone
Chi Running is a running technique which was developed by Danny Dreyer an ultra marathon runner who is a long time runner and student of T’ai Chi. The two main themes are energy efficiency and injury prevention. It combines the central movement principles of T’ai Chi with the sport of running to create a technique that shifts the workload toward your core muscles, allowing your leg muscles to work less. The results are increased efficiency and a significant reduction in injuries.
