Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Can low ferritin levels explain breathlessness?

PHippo - that was my understanding ie, iron absorption is an active rather than passive process so your body only absorbs what it needs, while iron overload is a disorder due to a problem with regulation of iron absorption. I work with some iron metabolism scientists so I should really ask them! That said, if the doctors on here are urging caution then its worth listening to that.

PHippo - woops sorry (would put in an embarrassed face here if I knew how) I'm a doc too, but PhD in Zoology, so not much help here really. I think my TSAT levels under Standers definition would be high.

iron overdosage is unusual but can be very serious
it's the leading cause of death by poisoning in children under 6 in some studies

nlm.nih.gov

It's highly unlikely in the quantities people on here are using, but i say again, if you don't actually need a medication, don't take it

yeah, poisoning is different
Most normal people would not be harmed by 600mg oral iron a day, but it might cause nasty side effects for no good reason

My patients get intravenous, and we run them with much higher ferritins
Johnny makes a good point about over the counter meds not necessarily being "safe"
Thank God for Pharmacists looking out for us
