Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Can low ferritin levels explain breathlessness?

And we are back to the TSAT.
Just because it's over the counter doesn't mean it's safe. I have seen plenty of people die from paracetamol, most of whom had no suicidal intent.
Taking any medication outside of it's recommended use is always goi g to be risky.

What are the dangers?
I take a daily multi-vit with iron, mainly because I'm vegetarian and want to avoid deficiency. When I used to give blood I was usually lowish but OK but once failed the test (I forget what they're testing for -- Hb?). But that was before I ran regularly. I suppose I'd like some reassurance that I'm not deficient because I just feel lack lustre and constantly tired at the mo!

Of course but if its over the counter and you are taking one a day (say 14mg) what's the risk(s)?

if you're taking a one a day multivitamin and mineral type tablet there's no problem
if you're taking therapeutic doses - ferrous sulphate 200mg 2 or 3 times a day when not actually deficicient, then you risk iron overload which has consequences for kidneys, liver and heart

Im not entirely convinced one wouild get iron overloaded from oral iron supplementation*

you might get nasty squits or constipation though

*unless you have a genetic problem with iron handling
