I was out for 8 hours 44 minutes on Sunday and had about 4 litres of water and a mars bar. You can worry about these things too much.

But N you seem to manage on very little and I bet if more food was on offer you woudl have taken it!!!

The point is, you don't really need it. We all have enough fat to keep going for days.

Just chuck some food in a bag, leave it at the start/finish area, job done.

Some people are more efficient than others though, you seem to be more effiecient N. I am getting better, I need about 5 gels in a marathon which I think is fairly normal!

Maybe, but I'm with Phil Hampton on this, I really don't think you *need* extra energy on a run (sure, it helps, if you're after a time). Just get through your glycogen stores, start burning fat and it's fine. It's not necessarily the best way to run, but it definitely eliminates all the faffing with energy drinks and gels etc.

yes, true but I like food and I hate being hungry. On training runs I have not been giving in to my hunger as much but when I start to feel hungry have made myself wait for a couple of miles before having something! When I am hungry and running it is such a struggle as I can feel I have so little energy. I know I have plenty of fat stores but that is inefficient fuel hence finding it a struggle to run when no glycogen left.

You're unlikely to have any glycogen left after 20 miles or so anyway.

Each to their own of course, there are no rules. I'd rather not be hungry either but it's good to know that if you're relying on water stations or checkpoints to have food or other energy sources and they don't show up (and this has happened to me at Edinburgh, Tanners & the Dorset Doddle this year) you can keep going regardless.

H, can u not just leave some gel things on the table and pick them up every 4-5 laps so u have the same as a marathon kinda? If the facility is there to leave stuff, then a couple of energy drinks and bar or something so u have something different as well maybe?

I *can't* get through a marathon coz i'm diabetic, but if i was doing something i think i'd prob just have gels as normal, prob leave couple bottles lucozade sport and a bar in case i couldnt take any more gels.

Good point N, I just hope it never happens though, I do tend to carry almost enough just in case checkpoints are lacking.

GF , that was the plan, to leave something at start/finish to pick up as I went past every 3 or 4 laps. Wont bother with gels but will have jaffa cakes/cereal/energy bars. Gels are OK and good if you are racing as I find solids difficult when going at MP or faster. I will be taking walk breaks for this though so it is much nicer to have some proper nice food to munch on whilst walking!

I was just thinking I might look strange to others if I am there with all my food/drink but not actually running that far away!!

GF, yes, if you have diabetes or something else that needs a lot of attention then it's important not to get stuck.
