I think JK was making the point (along the same lines as St George's Day) is that we celebrate and actively encourage some but not other types of events - my last RAO was leader of the LGBT in the British Army and was a top man and led the march with pride but wonder if they'd be an outcry if a 'Hetrosexual' March was ever mooted?

Well yes there would and not without reason: heterosexuality hasn't been at any stage outlawed. There are still plenty of states in the world where homosexuality is illegal, and punishable by imprisonment, sometimes for life. It was only made legal in the UK in 1967. In 1952 Alan Turing - despite being an unspoken civilian hero of WW2 - was charged with gross indecency and only escaped jail by agreeing to chemical castration. In 1954 he killed himself. I'd say that Gay Pride allows LGBT people to get in our face a bit and say 'we're here to stay'. I'd say that's A Good Thing. |

What happened to Turing was Medieval. Not only a hero of WW2 but one of the finest mathematical minds of all time.

Yup - heterosexuals don't need to hold Pride events. I expect it grinds some gears though because some events seem to exude a rather narrow 'being gay' stereotype.

Speaking of this ice bucket thing, this video and the fact that people seem to think that it's hilarious and not utterly heart breaking. How old is that little girl, 2? 3? The parents should be ashamed of themselves for both putting her through the challenge and that she knows that language. |

Thanks to McGoohan, Carpathius & Fellrunning for saying what I wanted to. Stonewall came about to fight bigotry and prejudice: here's a page on its work internationally: stonewall.org.uk |

Jobs that don't advertise what the salary, or even salary range is. Why? Its pretty vital for someone thinking of applying to know and nobody, surely, still lives with the fairytale idea that wanting the job for itself is the only thing that matters and salary is a minor consideration?

I'm with you, Jambomo. Often the job description doesn't make it clear how senior the role is, but the salary range usually does.
