the state doesn't though Chris and until society accepts responsibility for its own defence (which means conscription) then you'd best get your hands in ya pocket.

AFAIK Americans do it properly. And now that the "military covenant" is what? Law? -- or at least government policy, I'd like to think things will get better here.

But they won't, so military charities will remain and it's a bloody good thing they're there to pick up the pieces.

Not a chance Chris, so in the meantime it's up to us to look after them. Sorry but you're on a loser with that one.

I've said this before but companies that don't put their phone number anywhere, not on their letters and not on their website, as they want to discourage you from calling them. I'm litigating a case right now because the insurer have made themselves uncontactable by phone. It's their money I guess..

Oystergrinch: Which insurer is it? There are websites where people upload the phone numbers of companies that don't like being phoned, and a bit of Googling can often turn them up.

I do know what you mean Chris (speaking as yet another ex forces type) and I do have a problem with faux "hero" status. I didn't go into it for that, and I'm personally uncomfortable with the label. I'm not a hero or a saint.
However. I do think there's an obligation on society to make sure that those who are damaged by conflict (and most combatants do suffer some effects no matter what they may tell you) are properly looked after. Speaking for myself I never expected to be given anything, but it was nice, when I had some trouble recently, to have the support I needed.

You can mute self-service checkouts by pressing the icon in the bottom left with the speaker until an 'X' appears. Or at least turn them down to one bar which brings them down to a civilised volume.

[totally agree with you about the woman in the checkout machine - I have been known to shout "yes, I heard you the first time. just give me a minute will you?" at her]
