Presumably Aussies say it because back in the day, they would grab something and do a runner?

I'm trying to fill in a job application. I have the skills and would quite possibly be good at it (and it pays pretty well). I think that I've covered that bit ok. I'm having a bit with the next section which seems "write a section of sucky-up crawliness, that shows you've read something and can regurgitate it".
(And the referees: I can't provide a direct referee - it was a mass hiring and I've no idea who my line manager was, or even if there was a specific one.)

Dvorak - the company I worked for had a fairly strict 'no references' policy. All it would allow was confirmation, typically from HR, that 'this person worked for us from mmm-yy to mmm-yy', which, I suspect, is fairly common.

That's what NHS policy seems to be too, but when I do references for people for NHS and social care jobs I get sent huge questionnaires asking for all sorts of detail about personal qualities. Which is OK; the reason I'm asked is that I'm not bound by company policy and CAN write actual recommendations.

v'rap - the reason we weren't allowed was to prevent any risk of litigation.(It was a US corp). Either from the new employers if the person wasn't as wonderful as described, or from the employee if they felt they had had a job offer rejected because of the reference.
Although, it never stopped me giving personal references (clearly stated and not namimg the company or from a company email address) for people I had worked with - assuming I was going to give a good one. There were a few people I suggested that they 'find a more positive or suitable person' to give them a ref.

Yes, I'm aware of the reason It was most useful a few years ago when my practice was negotiating a settlement with a disgruntled employee and the employee wrote herself a flowery reference and requested that this be made part of the settlement. We were able to reply, "Nope, not allowed to, sorry."

Am I the only one completing fed up with seeing all these idiot football fans who think that watching a football match in huge crowds is more important than the threat of catching a potentially life threatening virus? Then travelling around the country to spread everything around again?
