Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

What do you know today, that you did not yesterday?

One of Britain's cities was given city status by Queen Victoria in 1842, but this was only recently realized, and came into force in August, 2022. That city is Gibraltar.

And meanwhile, Rochester upon Medway remains the only extant city to lose its city status, due either to an apparent bureaucratic oversight or deliberate political shenanigans.

I didn't know Rochester was called Rochester upon Medway. Which since Sue grew up in the Medway Towns is a bit embarrassing.

To be fair, the settlement itself and the diocese are both just called Rochester.

Rochester upon Medway was only named that way as a vehicle of local government for a couple of decades following the 1973 local government reforms. Medway district, which was a merger of Rochester, Chatham and Strood Rural, renamed itself as the City of Rochester upon Medway in order to retain Rochester's city status the first time they lost it!

When the City of Rochester Upon Medway and the Borough of Gillingham were excised from Kent and amalgamated into the Medway Unitary Authority, they failed to follow those steps and so letters patent was lost.

Crikey. I get very confused about what's what down there. We're visiting Sue's bestie in Rainham at the weekend. That seems quite nice. Said bestie used to live in Gillingham. That didn't.

I believe they were hoping to get Medway named a city but they’ve not succeeded yet.

It's amazing, when I spent my entire childhood living pretty much on the tidal bit of the Medway, just how few times I've been to Gillingham.

I think last time I was there they still had the TVS Television Theatre.

Actually, that's not true, I've been to Priestfield at least once since they demolished the Town End and put up scaffolding in lieu of the Brian Moore Stand.

The Gills away, rainy Tuesday night, early 1980s, one of a double-figures Huddersfield contingent. The stand felt like an offcut of Mile End stripped of any humour, good or bad.

Been to Gillingham twice, both times to do with the soccer club.

Prefer to go to Sheppey if I’m in that part of Kent, it’s a much maligned spot with some rather nice countryside

The aforementioned house in Gillingham was a five minute walk from Priestfield. I always got the impression that it wasn't a nice ground either in terms of facilities or crowd 'niceness'.
