Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

I understand why the organisers specify the need for support, including running support, and am happy to accept this as a reasonable barrier to my participation in the same way as I accept that the stipulation that walking-poles must be carried will rule me out of several otherwise tempting alpine events.

I think that only after a certain time will you have to run with a buddy. If you make the cut offs (don't know what they are) then you can continue without.

And if you're within (I think) 3 hours if the leader, you're not allowed a buddy runner. That rule may not affect me though...

I think when you reach Kinlochleven and its already dark then they encourage a buddy runner. Last year they had experienced WHW at Kinlochleven as back up if neither the runner or support runner didn't know the route. There is also a sweeper.

There are tons of reasons why support vital on this one. Past experience of thing going wrong, the rise in numbers, the difference in times betwen front runner and last runner, you're talking 15 hours for front runner and 35 for last, 2nd half a boulder field with no phone reception flanked by mountains, drop bags wouldn't work logistically and the time drop bag drivers would have to wait wouldn't be fair. It's too much responsibility to put on race director and marshalls adding in being unsupported therefore passing on the responsibility to support seems fair to me. I've supported more than one runner in a race and it's scary stuff trying to track them and be there.

Support numbers been limited to 2-4 this year as well.
