Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

So, on reading a book you really enjoy, do you think (Linds & westmoors) that you like it despite its flaws or to you there aren't flaws?

For instance, I loved BTOOT but Greppers really didn't. He had some criticisms of the book I just couldn't see. In that case, I didn't see any flaws.

Going back further, I really enjoyed Under The Skin but I suspect that was me getting into the book and ignoring any weaknesses.

I think I ignore weaknesses. Or maybe I can tolerate a certain level of weakness. I'm struck by the fact that I'm the same with Dr Who at the moment. I can ignore its many weaknesses because I actually enjoy watching it with the kids. Once pointed out, I can see them, but it doesn't impinge on my enjoyment. Maybe if they were pointed out mid-read, it might be different.

Good job I wasn't doing that with TCP then. Looking over your shoulder and pointing to a page and tutting ;-)

I see what you mean about Doctor Who. I'm the same with that.

Yes indeed. Sometimes OH does it when he reads a book directly after me. He did it with the first Dublin Murder Squad book and I felt quite angry with him :)

Yes, you can ignore the flaws if the rest outweighs them. In fact, I think one can ignore huge failings if there is one tiny thing in a book you really love.

You were right about BTOOT, too.

I remember that, Linds!

Raffo gets all annoyed (with the world) if he doesn't like a book I wholeheartedly recommend. Even though I always say, 'You might not like it - that's ok.'

I often see flaws in things I really like a lot, but the good stuff outweighs them.

Yes, think we've got a bit diverted. That's OK, though.

In discussing any work of literature we are necessarily discussing the fundamental nature of all art, and by extension, existence itself. Discuss.

“It’s just a book.”
