I'm probably giving up my volunteer tutoring at the end of this term, as it clashes with some other things that are calling on my time. Started at end of 2021, so I feel like I've given it a good go. 5 pupils - 3 got passes in Maths that they needed and weren't expecting to get, 1 dropped out of school system the following year, through non attendance and this one is only S2, so no formal exams this year. It's been an interesting experience, and very challenging to me. I can't imagine how hard secondary teaching to classes of 30 or so unruly teenagers must be. You all have my utmost admiration! ![]() |

This may be better on the politics thread, but just in case you are inclined to sign this petition against outsourcing of professional services at University of Surrey: The University of Surrey proposes to employ all new Professional Services staff through its subsidiary company: Operate Surrey: Operate Surrey – Jobs at the University of Surrey. This constitutes outsourcing work to employees of a limited company who will not benefit from the staff rights our unions fight hard for including national level pay bargaining and pensions. New professional services staff will be employed on worse terms and conditions, such as pension / sick pay / leave, and will be dependent on performance criteria for annual pay progression (which does not apply to existing University of Surrey staff). Every penny the University makes in profiting from these divisive plans will come directly from the pockets of Operate Surrey staff. speakout.web.ucu.org.uk |

The worst thing is that there are a small number who have already been employed on these absolutely terrible contracts. We really need to get them onto UoS contracts, but of course it's made more difficult because the unions aren't recognised (and we have 3, rather than 1).
