Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Hi all, my training partner (a non-fetchie) has been struggling to get to the end of long runs and has to pull out leaving me to run on alone... most inconvenient! ;)

After doing some fueling experiments we think we've ruled 'energy' out as the problem as after today suspect maybe he is getting water intoxication. He says he feels physically ok but very dizzy and discombobulated. Talking becomes difficult and says he feels 'like staying conscious is a real effort' :-o Not good.

This is his first try at a marathon training plan so isnt really used to running much long distance. Does water intoxication sound feasible? If so, what can we do to try and help.

Cheers :)

Are you also taking into account that running long distance - not everyone adjusts to it, and it can take a while for the body to adjudst - thats if they adjust at all

Could be water intoxication/hyponatraemia. Just try electrolyte drink on the next run.

Also, what resolves it? Does he just sit down and rest? Or does he eat a packet of salt and vinegar crisps?

Well I think he said he had drunk about 3 pints prior to running had a 500ml bottle which he refilled x 3 and another pint glass full at 8 miles.

MnP, we did train for a half together last year and he got up to 10 mies with none of these issues, probably because that was during the winter and therefore sweating less?

Poots, we had a pretty good gel fueling strategy going and he said his legs dont feel tired, just a bit wrong in the 'ead! ;)
