Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Mum is going to be in Hammersmith hospital the week after next for heart surgery.

Am I ok to pace the streets in a mindless tear filled haze?
Is there a nearby bookshop, big shop, nice cafe I can hide in for 1-3 hours?

I was going to train up and use daily but mum said about a hotel. Premier inn is about 1.5m away on the main road is that ok to walk down?

Anything else I need to think about or consider?

Thanks fetchies xx

Which direction from the hospital is the hotel? The road is busy but runnable, but there are quieter places nearby?

Wormwoods Scrubs is also a big open green space. I have to admit, I was thinking of Hammersmith Broadway when you said Hammersmith Hospital. One of my friends did his medical training at Hammersmith and lived in that area, so I associated the hospital with there. There would be nice riverside runs there and some good pubs.

Pix, I'm not local to that area but must stress as a smallish (and now elderly) woman I have NEVER found it unsafe to run in most areas of London. I'm sure Fetchies based that side of town will have ideas.

There is no much around that immediate area. There is a big Westfield shopping centre about 20 minutes walk away. There are places to eat or you can zone out amongst the crowd. There is also a cinema of you need a distraction / timeout from hospital.

Hospital cafe is decent to good as I remember (good croissants) but you still might want to bring a flask so you you can sort your own tea / coffee and somewhat healthy food.

The area is not unsafe and not being a tourist hotspot, I don't think you need to be on guard but still, try not to be walking around with your phone out, particularly near pedestrian crossings.

The scrubs behind the hospital is just scrub land. Might be nice for a walk but it's flat and can be muddy. It's suitable to run and Met League cross country is held there. There is nothing really nice to look at - not like a park but perfectly fine for a run.

Oh - I am in the habit of bringing Vicks or tiger balm to hospital. If you have some, you might want to pack it - maybe extra for you mum too if she is in a ward

Personally I would 100% be going to Westfields and hanging out in there.

Also would be very happy running round that area if you're thinking of doing that

Hope everything goes ok with the surgery!

Wormwood scrubs itself is a nice run actually, especially in Autumn. They do XC relays around there, so it's muddy, but not super hilly or anything.

There is also a track belonging to Thames Valley Harriers I think.

Roads tend to be a little "lawless" driver wise around Hammersmith and upwards, so watch out on crossings.

Westfield is good to hang around in. Loads of shops and coffee places. Buses are decent in the area if it's too far for you walk.
