So my hubby ran a GFA qualifying time for his age group on Monday. The official qualifying time is 3.10.00, and he ran a 3.08.22. They obviously only accept the fastest runners in this catagorie. Is there any way to see what the actual qualifying time went down to for the 2022 race, to see if he is anywhere near it. Cannot seem to find the information online. Did anyone in that age group get in with a time around the 3.08 mark? |

I think the last time they did it properly it was 3:07:20 for the 3:10:00 cut off (v45-49?). I'm in a similar boat, ran 3:08:34 but am not holding out any hope that that time would make the cut given how much pressure there is on places and the increase in average speeds which some of the new shoe tech appears to have created.

Past qualifying times also not really an indicator as it depends on how many people apply for GFA too though I can't remember if that's overall or in each age group.

I think they applied the same time "discount" on all age categories last time to hit the 3000 entrants mark for each gender category. So all men's times were 2m40 faster than the headline category time, for example. There are plenty of other ways they could do it (e.g. %age time faster applied consistently to each age category, so if it was 2:55 for a 3:00, that would be 5:50 for a 6:00 time) but that was how it was done last time, if memory serves.

He's hoping to better his time, but trying to find a fast course, that is logistically easy to get to, and before the cut off date is proving difficult.

Very like the Boston system. I plundered a 3:14:27 against a GFA of 3:20, so pretty confident that’s enough. I didn’t ease up though, was on 3:17:xx pace at mile 20 and dropped the hammer to make sure. I’ve heard that many races are really struggling for entries so based on that the GFA cut off may not be as tough as pre Covid and close to the target may suffice. Good luck! |

Weasie - they've extended the cut off date for 2023 GFA qualification to the 2nd October so that gives more opportunity to find a suitable race. Chester is on 2nd October, good race and fast course. |

Shadeshe has looked at Chester. He thought the last few miles were a bit lumpy though, but never having done it, we could be wrong. Also looked at the Hull one, but I think the idea of running up to the bridge in the last couple of miles seems daunting.

Weasie Chester is fast, just a little bump in the latter stages. So many runners do a PB there, very well organised too. I haven't done Hull so can't comment on that one, I expect it's windy too running up to the bridge. |
