Big Toe joint replacement

After trying all conservative treatments for arthritis of my left big toe- I have been told by my podiatrist that I have come to the last resort- surgery. He says I need the joint replaced( NOT fused). Anyone know anything about this or even had the procedure done? Can I still run once it has healed fully? waiting for him to send letter to GP for referral to orthopaedic specialist surgeon in foot and ankle. Only info I can find online suggests NOT to run with one- been told Paula Radcliffe has one and runs. any info would be greatly appreciated. I also have a bunion on the same toe. I NEED running for my mental health. MY blog is "buddies only" and shows my struggles with depression. Thank you so much. NRGEE

Sorry I can't help you with this, NRGEE I don't know anything about that. With a hip resurfacing the (Google) advice is to wait 12 months to avoid the risk of fracturing the neck of the femur. I didn't know that though and started running about 4 months after my op! There is a paper about.... "Recreational sport activity after total replacement of the first metatarsophalangeal joint". ncbi.nlm.nih.gov Towards the end it mentions that "patients were able to return to jogging, golf, hiking and tennis." Hope that information helps. |

I have a replacement hip and, like Ness, the advice was not to run for a year (not from my surgeon, fortunately) which I’m afraid I ignored. I ran after 4 months and had some good years afterwards. I’m sure you’ll be ok to run again.

Tell the surgeon that you are a runner and will not consent to any procedure that will put an end to your running career. There are several options for surgical management of 1st MTPJ arthritis, and as far as I am aware none of them should prevent you from running in the future provided the procedure is straightforward.

Thanks for everyones' advice/info. I have decided to get a 2nd opinion from the NHS specialist in biomechanics to check nothing more can be done with orthotics, before going along line of surgery. The specialist knows me well- I just reckon his waiting list will be huge.

Saw orthopaedic consultant this morning. I do NOT need a toe replacement or toe fusion. I DO need surgery: removal of degenerated cartilage and replacement with an artificial membrane.Removal of bunion( shaving it down) and drilling small holes in the toe joint. I cannot afford this privately -£7000 quoted Am getting GP to refer me to a surgeon the consultant has recommended on the NHS I asked what I do in the meantime ie can I run? I CAN run- I am wearing my right orthotic but not the left one( which caused the severe blisters)Specialist in biomechanics has retired and no one yet to replace him( NHS) |
