Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I find the bigger the city the less chance of a response. I passed three runners in Paris this evening, not one returned my wave and an attempt at hello.

Chrisull. Surely the cyclists in Cornwall are too out of breath going up and down hills to be able to even raise a smile, let alone a greeting ;-)

I'm a miserable bastard Londoner and I don't greet other runners, neither do any of the other miserable bastards out pounding the streets of London greet me. And that suits me just fine :) One of the things I value about running is time to zone out and get lost in my own thoughts. That would be seriously impeded by the need to greet every one of the dozens of other runners I might see on an average run. Having said that, assuming I notice, I do respond on the rare occasion someone greets me - I'm not a total git.

Strictly observed rules in the dormitory town I live in. A cheery greeting to a fellow runner in the town is almost always ignored. Once on the lanes out of town, greetings are nearly always returned by runners and horse riders, somewhat less so by cyclists.

It was folk nodding or hello'ing that made me feel like a proper runner in that first year of running.

I tend to tip my water bottle if I'm totally out of breath but as I'm in a small town you'll run past someone you know at some point.

I don't acknowledge purephase when I'm out and about as that'd mean I'd need to acknowledge him at home too ;)
