MR.M
HI..I have a 5k coming up in a weeks time. My current PB is 20:20 but i feel I can go quicker with a proper poke in the right direction of how its BEST to run this race distance. Do I go all out from the start or is it better to run it in 1 mile divisions of fast..faster..fastest. Anyone whos done sub 20, 19, 18 or less will have their minds firmly fixed on a method that works for them. Can anyone advise....thanks fello aths

I'm in exactly the same situation. My PB is 20:08. I've always figured that, as a marathonner I could just go out like the clappers and hold it, but I'm also open to suggestions...

I've only ever used the "run as fast as you can for as long as you can" method. I'm sure there are better ways!

Imagine a line. Put your nuts on that line. Run like you've stolen something. Run until you feel you might pass out.
Keep trying this until times improve or your nuts are mashed or you get nicked or end up in coma.
zzz try *yawn* intervals zzzz

Start fast, speed up in the middle and then sprint for the line.
Not that I have ever done one.

Same.
My 5k PB is 20.44
Haven't run 5k since my new 10k PB of 41.41 though so think I would definitely be faster now.
Genuinely don't think there is any other way than run until you feel like you're going to die - that's how I got my last one anyway!

5ks hurt. Once you can get your head round that you'll know how to do it. Its not actually baws oot from the start, but near enough. It'll feel faster than you think you can maintain all the way. When it starts feeling tough, speed up, and then towards the end speed up a bit more.
Disclaimer: I've only ever run a handful of 5ks, but apart from the first they've been successful enough.

It's true, they are painful from about 800m .You'll probably run the first mile too fast so try and hold it back to your target pace, second mile will probably be at target pace without holding it back and then - assuming it is not an uphill finish ( only a true bastard race director would finish a 5k uphill) blow the tanks in the last mile in the knowledge that when you cross the line, you can die happy with a pb and the pain is over.

Alt plan is to train for and achieve massive 10k PB then turn up at 5k and smash it.
