are you doing full sit ups or crunches?
as someone suggested your back pain might be due to ab strength (or lack of it!) and tightness. i would think you are better to try strength and stretching work rather than insoles etc.

Situps, bending over to touch my toes, golf..... all things I have abandonned to stop my back hurting! Funnily enough running helps it a lot!

I don't do traditional sit ups, but pilates roll ups yes. But I don't think there's actually much of a difference...lol
Marc, I feel your pain. I have some very messed up feet, which currently sit in NHS (free) orthotics every day with comfort. When I first started wearing them I could barely walk a few steps, they felt that painful and took 2 weeks to break them in to be able to walk, but now wearing them is like heaven. So be patient. I've come to terms that I have a very messed up right ankle which I've sprained several times ever since I was a kid competing in gymnastics, the tendons are totally calcified, it does a lovely snapping sound ever so often. Same foot ended up with a pulled calf, achilles tendonistis and plantar fasciitis back to back to back. So my empathies. I've luckily had good physios, all NHS, not paid a penny. I've actually come to the conclusion that I'd be better off not running and just x-train. It feels a bit strange saying that on a running site. I might be expelled I might change my mind sometime in the future but not for now.

if your back is hurting do full sit-ups the chances are your abs aren't strong enough and your back is having compensate and therefore hurting. you probably need to go back to crunches/plank etc and work from there. are you in a gym? if you are get some advice.
