Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Shackleton: why bother?

Neither would I. It's not 'exploration' by any definition that I know.

(Another reason why the fact above is clearly untrue is that Shackleton defined himself as an 'Irishman' (he was born and mainly brought up in ireland), and hired some Irish crew members.)

My son informed me this morning of the precise number of Hula Hoops that would be necessary to lay end to end in order to reach the moon and that just as soon as he develops his shrink ray he will be using them as a pathway. I wonder whether that could be marketed as a rpoject worth undertaking?

with global warming proceeding, by 2014 Antartica will be shorts, flip flops and sunglasses territory, won't it ?

I've always fancied going to the Antartic, on a cruise ship mind. None of that trapsing about over frozen wastelands with the constant fear of being attacked by rougue penguins.

And then there's the food. The only way to get enough calories in you each day is to eat pats and pats of raw butter? Ugh, no thanks.

"The only prerequisite is 100% commitment."

So would that make most footballers over-qualified as they can only give 110%?

Does less than 100% even count as "commitment", I wonder?

Sidebar: Binks! :-)

Anything below 99.9% is 'reasonably keen', I'd have thought.
