Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I got half way through the application form and gave up.

Still, nobody died.

How can there be 'constant danger' if safe return is 'without a doubt'?

Nothing there about having to be able to operate Twitter, or Facebook, or write a blog, on a regular basis, which surprises me. Because I'm certain they'd want to put live updates out there from the team in the style of a reality tv programme, if only for money from, say, Channel 4...

They've also written 'on board' as one word, not two. Gah.

"Can you draw/paint? Please give details."

Is this to back up the photographers in case the cameras freeze over? Isn't it difficult holding a paintbrush while wearing Antarctic-issue gloves?

Interesting fact: the application form for the original expedition had just two lines, "Are you An Englishman of Stout Character Y/N" and "Please attach Portrait of One's Moustache so We may Judge this to be True."

Shackleton didn't have a moustache, so I doubt that's true.

From my memory of the book, he interviewed/met most of them before choosing them.

There's also the fact that cameras weren't everyday items back then.

"We also require substitutes who will be selected to be dedicated subs who may be called upon at the very last minute to step in and be part of the overland crossing team."
Er...yes...

I'm going out and may be sometime. Oh dear - that was Oates, wasn't it? He should have stayed home and played guitar and sung like his very talented descendant who had the wisdom to recognise when something was bigger than both of us.

"How would you sell or promote this expedition to a potential corporate sponsor?"

I wouldn't.
