*Warning: I'm not going to post any pictures, but even words can be yucky!*
Since last Sunday's marathon, I have a very sore big toe. The nail hasn't gone too dark (yet), and I've done what I've learnt last time and pierced the skin underneath a bit to get the liquid out. There isn't an awful lot of it at any one time, but just after walking on it for a while, it does get really sore again, and then when I pierce the skin again, there's more liquid coming out. So, I've been doing that a few times every day for the last week. It's a bit painful to bend the toe, and certainly painful to walk on it.
How long should I expect it to be sore for? Is it the right thing to keep on piercing the skin when the toe gets too sore to get some liquid out, or am I keeping it from healing that way, and should just ignore the pain?
(Told you it was going to be manky, didn't I? ;-))

Would you say its like a blister underneath the big toe nail? Does the nail seem to be changing at all? Have you tried cutting it back?

Thanks, Lauchy!
No, don't think there's a blister, not sure. I've cut it back as far as possible. It's changing insofar as the colour gets lighter every time after extracting some liquid (and then darker again), and there's a rather dark bit at its bottom (blood), which I've been trying to get rid of. To be honest, I've been manipulating it so much that I'm not sure whether any changes are due to that or the nail itself...

Oh spicedapple that sounds very sore, I still have two toenails which are damaged since VLM. My left foot big toenail has gone all transparent and feels very wobbly and the wee toe next to it is black and blue and has a break half way up which hurts when I am running. It is not even nice enough weather for me to wear sandals until they fall off! No advice just thought I'd share in your agony - hope it sorts itself soon.

The toenail itself, PH? I've tried that before (different occasion), having heated a needle in the hob's flame, but just couldn't get through it...

It happened to me and I cut it right back on one and the other peeled off. Grew back far stronger. You may have to be patient, these things take forever to heal and recover.

How do I get it hot enough to go through the toenail (and, erm, how am I going to hold a very hot paper clip?)?
