Minnie Mad
Fofo sums me up at the moment. We don’t bounce very well as we got older, if it happens it takes a lot of getting over. I’m still not sure how or why I fell, at parkrun but I am still recovering from a broken arm and subsequent frozen shoulder. I don’t know if I will ever get my confidence back, certainly not to the extent I had it before.

It is definitely not easy to run carefree when you have taken a tumble that has caused an injury. I have two knees that have suffered from separate falls this year. I am still running cautiously because of the last but fear can stop you living if you let it.

Falling is partly a consequence of aging, though it is clear that some people have a less good sense of balance. I have been aware of poor balance ever since childhood. I nonetheless have always enjoyed being on rough terrain in the mountains. I was a regular rock-climber for many years and had a few falls, but no serious injury. Since my mid-fifties, I have fallen regularly when running, or when scrambling over rocks. Nowadays, in my seventies, I fall about once per week, usually when descending on rough steep slopes, though occasionally on the stairs at home. I have learned to relax as I fall and rarely suffer significant injury. Yesterday I ran on snow covered hillsides. I kept my eyes open for outcrops of smooth icy rock, and focussed on keeping my shoulders very relaxed at all times. I think this helps me to remain relaxed as I fall.

Merry Christmas & Happy New G(rrr)
Sorry to hear that Minnie. I have almost never fallen, but I had a fall a couple of weeks ago. It was a roll of fencing hidden below some overgrown grass, so not my fault. But the bit I was going to sympathise with is how long it takes to recover. I didn't think I'd done much damage (landed on my shoulder, quite heavily, and a bit of neck pain the next day). But a week later I had a bad hip, on the side that I'd caught my foot, and I've been out for nearly 2 weeks non running now, as it got worse when I ran on it.
So, I hope you get better quickly. But I also hope you recover your confidence too. Everyone should be able to walk and run without fear of falling, for a long, long time, I would hope. Very best wishes, G

Minnie, I can relate! In 2021 I fell down a waterfall on a walk. It was wet and as I decided it was too dangerous to ford the river above the waterfall, I was launched down it awkwardly, sideways, twisting, as I took my phone out of my pocket to take some photos and retrace my steps. I nearly died and fractured, dislocated and separated my shoulder, ripped a rotator cuff and subluxated the bicep tendon... I will never fully heal but dealing with that is infinitely easier than the Post Traumatic Stress of the actual fall! I have not been back there... And generally lost my nerve...

I’ve run 4 of the 5 days this week & cycled 2 days.
Today was the first slip but recovered quickly to stay upright & I’m taking as much care as possible - pace this week is much slower than usual.
