Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Okay folks, as a one-off, we have two years to guess today: one of these follows a request from Ocelot Spleens, but I thought it may be a bit tough so I've added a bonus year.

So, here are your clues for Year 1:

1) The Forth Bridge, across the Firth of Forth in Scotland, is opened to rail traffic
2) Publication of Oscar Wilde’s only novel, The Picture of Dorian Grey
3) Birth of Stan Laurel

and Year 2:

1) Donald Campbell's body is recovered from Lake Coniston, 34 years after he died in an attempt to break the land water speed record
2) The Bank of Scotland and the Halifax merge to form HBOS
3) A rail crash near Selby kills 10 people

I know the century for Year 1. And that Stan Laurel was born in the Lake District.

I think the first one will be difficult for anyone, I couldn’t come up with an obvious event!

I’ll do the next set about 11.15, the next set might help with year 2.

Simple rules:
3 sets of questions over about 45 minutes. F-mail me your answer. One guess only - if you get it right after the first set give yourself 4 points, 3 points after the second set, 2 points after the third, you get the idea? If you turn up but still get it wrong you get a point for being a good egg.
