Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Probably you didn't mean when I went out with my shorts inside out and didn't realise until I was at London Bridge?

So, one evening I was very tired and fell asleep at my keyboard. Liebling was already abed. I went to the bathroom to take my clothes off and go from there to bed myself. I was impatient to just get my head down so I tried to take off jogging trousers, underpants and socks in one swift movement.

I stuck my fingers down the elastic waistband of joggers and pants and shoved them down my legs and collected my socks as I went for an ultra efficient disrobing. So there was a lot of elastic caught up in there now with my fingers inbetween. I heard a loud 'snap!' and felt a strange twinge in my left hand. But I thought it had just been the elastic snapping.

However, when I pulled my hand free something was wrong. The tip of my middle finger was floppy from the first knuckle. I couldn't hold it straight. I'd push it up with the fingers of my right hand only to see it fall over ninety degrees.

I went to wake my wife up. 'Lisa, Lisa! I've broken my finger!' I waved my hand in front of her face as she woke, groggily from deep sleep. That must've been nice for her.

Anyway, she drove me to the hospital. This was IIRC, a Thursday night and now about 1am. Despite being a school night, the A&E dept was full of drunks. One guy was handcuffed to a hospital gurney with a policeman waiting beside. The bloke was unconscious with drink. He'd been drink-driving!

I showed the nurse and a junior doctor my wound and they both went, 'Urgh!' and 'How did you do that?' They may have had to supress a giggle when I told them... Anyway, it was 'hammer finger', also called in the US 'catchers finger' - it's a common baseball injury. I'd snapped or overextended the ligament. I was told that it would heal naturally if the finger was kept straight, but it would take weeks or even months. I had to wear a sort of sheath-thing over it for about three months in the end. It did heal but it still feels oddly different to the other fingers.

Who would have thought getting undressed could be so dangerous. I might need to change my disrobing habits.
