Accepting the Shuttle data is probably the way to go, I don't know whether this site gives any useful clues into how to sort out elevation, I used it to tidy up Welsh Castles Relay stages where the people hadn't enabled correction and it worked very well, rather than repeat myself about how I checked it, here's what I said at the time
