I get most of my reading books second hand. This means that sometimes I get lucky and there’s an inscription inside the cover. I like to imagine the two people that the book brought together, but then what led the recipient to give the book away. I’ve just finished George Orwell’s Why I Write which is a collection of essays including the title one. Inside the cover was this: In this case I imagine Yandell hides an unspoken love for Carr, and that the latter inspired the former in their journalistic career. Got any interesting ones on your shelf? |

This was in one of the Michael Rosen books I bought 2nd hand, for reading to my class. "Can we have the funny book?" they sometimes plead when we have a few minutes with nothing else to do, but have a good laugh. I hope Lalitha enjoyed it as much as my crew do. |

I can share one or two. Here’s the first. This is from a three-volume pictorial Bible which I bought in a second-hand book shop in Bristol about 30 years ago. It was evidently in the possession of several members of the Coleridge family (but not Samuel Taylor Coleridge!) and the final name is Alice Mary Coleridge (1846-1907). She has a Wikipedia entry and was a promoter of education for women, Wikipedia noting that she was an “instigator” of Abbots Bromley School for Girls. |

Here’s one more for now. This was in my maternal grandmother’s collection of travel books. Can anyone decipher the inscription? (I can’t!) |

it says “with best wishes and warm congratulations” above the book title and I *think* it says “from the author Annie” under the title

Good work, Hibeedeb! Yes, I think you’re right. I never thought of googling, but the author seems to be Anne Brassey, so Annie (or Anni?) would fit. How about the rest? Could it be to Major someone? |
