Good morning, I couldn't see a thread on the Fred - is anyone else in or training?

I am a fat guy (BMI 28) who has hardly cycled in years. I need to lose 15Kg by June.

I've started well, 4Kg in last couple of weeks. 2hrs on a Watt Bike today was tough.

Cool - thank you! What gearing and time did you do?

The Bee is a fast rider T, he finishes well up the order!

Good luck with the training, might be worth fitting mtb spds and using mtb shoes for Hardknott and Wrynose in case you have to consider walking up those two steep swines of hills.

On my Solo bike I used a hybrid compact 50/36 with a 11-32 cassette

On the tandem we have smaller gears 50/34 and 11-36

I concur with Dai. SPDs with shoes you can walk in are far more practical.

I have tried to google suggestions but to no avail. How many weeks before would you do a 100? littlelumpy.co.uk looks like a quality event but it is 3 weeks before. Is it too soon? The 'official' Fred plan has a 100 5 weeks before and has 70 miles with 2800m climb 3 weeks before. The little lumpy has a 60 with 1400m of climb or a 100 with 2600m. My gut suggests there's enough time to recover but would welcome thoughts.

I'd say there was plenty of time to recover. 3 weeks is quite a long time to recover and it's not like running, as it is perfectly feasible to ride back to back long days *if* you don't batter yourself!

And the Fred is a ride that you *have* to manage.
Lots of people get carried away in the first 10 miles which includes a flat start and the first climb - which many ride WAY too hard - and it will completely scupper the rest, and especially the latter parts, of the ride.
Think of the section as far as the start of the 3 Northern Passes (Honister Newlands and Whinlatter) as your warm up, and think of things *really* starting once you are off the A66 and heading down Borrowdale

Thanks - I will try not to go too fast but I'm sure I will! Long day. I did the 5 dams in Western Australia 150 miles off no more than 60 miles - I was in bits near the end.
