Would it be worth charting the progress of the baton on a map - not step by step or to the actual address of the Fetchie holding it, but at least to the town where the baton resides? Folk can then say "Hey, I live near Budleigh Salterton, I could take it for a bit and move it onwards". We could have a map showing where it's gone, tracking mileage and such, and have a final point where it is now. The route planner could do that if someone would be able to maintain it. I think I could probably spare enough time to click twice on a map.
