An IT question ... about VPNs and streaming content from abroad

Last time I was abroad for a while I started by surfing around looking for free options but ended up just paying (not much) for a better service.

Looks like I'll be doing some work for my old employer. I'll be watching and recording foreign TV streams, preferably the live broadcast from the station's own website. Thing is, a couple of them tell me that the content is not available here due to country restrictions.

So how to get round this? I know only that the sites are blocking the UK, I don't know which other if any countries they also don't like.

Maybe a vpn?

Obviously, at minimal cost or if paid, not...
