Great North Run
Not the day I was expecting. For a start they increased the price of the buses on the day (£50 for a half marathon I think the buses should be free) despite advertising the cost in the course information booklet, which felt a bit like we were being milked. Then they closed the baggage drop-off before our bus had even dropped us off at the start! We had to run half a mile up the road to the late baggage and when I ran back they had closed my start pen. I managed to sneak in once the race had started but was quite far back.
Once I got going I knew within the first 2 miles that it was going to be a struggle. I tried to slow down a bit and enjoy it. The Red Arrows were a real highlight. When it started lashing down I started feeling pretty good (I love running in the rain!) and picked it up miles 6-8. Overtook Robbie Savage in mile 7
I thought I would be able to keep pushing strongly but come mile 9 I was struggling again and just had to slog it out to the finish. I was just wanting it to end and really wasn't enjoying it. In hindsight I'm quite pleased with the time considering.
When I finished I had to wait ages for the late baggage to arrive and I was starting to get really cold. Bumped into Becca7 and met RunningMumof3boys which was nice :-). Finally met up with Laura, Lay and John who had all done really well.
To top the day off the Police shut the local roads so we couldnt get out of the car park until 5pm! Hours of waiting around. It was a loooong day by the time we got home. All in all I'm glad I did the race but I won't be rushing back.
