Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

So.

I might be doing the above with a group of women who are part of Bedfordshire Business Women. The President of this group wants to fundraise for our local Cancer Charity (The Primrose Unit), and get the members more active, so we will be targeting 5km runs/run-walks and longer walks (like Twilight thingies and wotnot). She's asked me to advise on training, staying injury free and possibly even have some get togethers where we run as a group with me leading...

My question is, (if you've managed to get this far and well done if you have), can I do that without a coaching qualification? If not, can I do it with a level 1 coaching qualification?

Would love advice/feedback on my poor punctuation/unconnected banter/ but even just a yes or no will do.

Thanks all.

Hello
I lead a running group. I did the UKA Leader in Running Fitness course which is a one-day course costing about £110 I think. It covers you insurance wise and gives you the basics that you probably already know but is good to be told you're doing right. You can't do the Level 1 coaching (which I think is called something different now) without being a run leader first, but the Run Leader course would be enough for what you're doing.

Hi LGR :-)

Thanks for that. When you say it covers you insurance wise, have you taken insurance out and how much did it cost?

And is your running group one that's affiliated to a club?

My running buddy did a day course with Run England to be a run leader (may be the same one as LGR mentions) - covered all the legal stuff as well as coaching skills.

Thanks AL, I think that's the one I would do, if I need to...

I suppose it is in part a question of trust - on their part of you, and on yours of them - an informal arrangement might be fine?

You don't need to be a qualified coach to offer advice. My coach doesn't have any quals that I know of.

As far as I can see if you aren't charging and its informal then you should need it for group leading either, as long as its a group of mates going out for a run together, but if you are thinking of charging then I guess you would want insurance in case someone has an accident.

I know my running club offers these courses at reduced rates or for free if you are willing to lead the club groups afterwards... Might be worth finding out if your club does something similar?

Indeed AL, I think that's very true...trust will play a part if I go down that route.

Curly, no I wouldn't be charging the BBW members. I would love to be able to coach at Bedford Harriers but the time commitment is not something I could take on at the moment. I'm ok with funding the course myself, I think it could be useful as part of my job anyway.

I've just found a day that I can do on 29th September at Lee Valley...am hovering over booking it.

As I understand it, as a UKA run leader you're insured to an extent if anyone has an accident on a run you're leading provided you've done your risk assessments etc.
