Welcome 1step2far

Some fair points about taking good care going this way though, it’s heavily trust based on both sides:

independent.co.uk

No doubt that when the dust settles, some placements will work out great, and some won’t.

I would expect the placements organised by charities such as Refugees At Home to have a greater chance of success, but at the same time there’s a humanitarian crisis of overwhelming proportions going on and they can only do so much.

Newsletter from Refugees at Home:

mailchi.mp

Sounds like they are flat out and doing everything they can. Taking on staff to help, this would be an alternative way to make a huge difference if anyone has the time.

---------------

GROWING THE TEAM

We are growing our team of seven by at least TEN admin roles. These are full-time, working from home – with face-to-face days in London (probably not until we have found a bigger space) and paid at London Living Wage for an initial six-month contract.

We will need available people with great IT skills, a meticulous attention to detail, speed and empathy to process all the new applicants quickly.

We already have people starting training this week and next Monday. But it’s likely we will need more pretty soon.

Here’s the job description
mcusercontent.com
Please apply to recruitment@refugeesathome.org

GROWING OUR HOME VISITOR TEAM

While we are really pleased to welcome over 400 new Home Visitors, depending only on volunteers isn’t going to be enough for the next few months.

So we are offering freelance work to some Home Visitors who can commit to do AT LEAST FIVE VISITS A WEEK and preferably rather more.

We will pay £50 a visit – mostly they will be virtual to increase speed, but ones nearby could be in person. The task is the same as before but the commitment would be very much greater.

Please email recruitment@refugeesathome.org with expressions of interest. If you want more information, please email our senior safe-guarding trustee, Marion Kafetz, on marion.kafetz@refugeesathome.org

Plus, to reiterate to existing HVs: we do appreciate what you do, and know it’s all in your spare time. Without you we simply could not function. But if you could reply speedily saying whether or not you can do a particular visit when we get in touch, that would help us no end.

It looks like there has been some good progress with people setting up website platforms to match UK hosts with people seeking homes.

The FB groups that sprung up in the last month seem to be directing people to use these now rather than sharing details on Facebook.

This post has a lot of practical information, offers suggestions on how to make contact and what info to check, then how to navigate the visa application process:

dbuxton.notion.site

Here are the matching sites I've found:

ukrefuge.com
opora.uk
homesforukrainians.co.uk

We have been contacted by someone on behalf of Rooms for Refugees putting us in touch with people staying in Poland. But we've failed to get video chats sorted (arranged time to call and then they didn't pick up, over a couple of days) and the next family they have offered are not a good fit for us.

Am going to list ourselves on some of the above platforms, as it looks like that will lead to more practical matches, faster than having an intermediary passing details back and forth.

Another matching service, this time with backed by the UK government:

homesforukraine.org.uk

The charity doing this work are Reset, they were set up in 2018. Hosts can submit details through the website above.

We've found a young family now, we were given their details through Rooms for Refugees (the family had posted on a FB group) and had a good chat with them a couple of days ago.

Just spent a while going through the visa applications and found it pretty hard going but hopefully they will go through in the next two weeks.

Opora have a travel partner who are offering free travel to UK from any country, if hosts/guests matched on their platform:

That's great Fuzzy Duck :-)

I've not heard anything, but think my location a slight factor. Will be patient so many needing homes.

B Rubble
I'm the same 1stf. We're fairly rural, although only 20 minutes from Bristol and Gloucester. I have a work colleague who has some friends in eastern Ukraine, I'll ask if they have any contacts that we can help out.

Got something to say?
