Stilton Striders was formed back in 1982 and the club and its members have been jogging and running ever since. We have a thriving junior section of around 40 young athletes and a similar number of senior runners.

Juniors
The juniors train regularly at venues around Melton Mowbray (indoors and outdoors) under the guidance of our UK:athletics qualified coaches Diane Underwood and Richard Cox, and several assistant coaches who are experienced athletes themselves. For more information about the juniors' training sessions contact Diane Underwood (see contacts page). Youngsters of all abilities are welcome.

Seniors
We have senior members spanning all ages, with the youngest in their 20s and eldest in their 60s. And we have members who run for fun and to keep fit, as well as those who train to compete with the very best athletes in Leicestershire.

If you're unsure about whether joining a club is for you, do come along and join in one of our Wednesday night training runs in Melton and find out more about us. We are a friendly club, prepared to help and encourage new runners to achieve their goals, be it improved fitness or a particular race target. Please always remember we were all once new and inexperienced runners ourselves so never hesitate to ask advice (we like it!).

The seniors meet at the Sports Hall at the King Edward VII Upper School every Wednesday evening to set off for our club run at 7.00 pm. We have a notice board outside the Sports Hall where we display the route for the Wed night run around Melton (as well as the latest club news). Usually between 20 and 30 runners join in these sessions and we set off together for a fairly sociable 10 min warm-up run and chat. We then split up into several groups to allow runners to train together at a level appropriate to their ability and fitness, and we try to ensure that the groups stick together so that no runner is left to run alone. We typically aim to run for between 40 and 60 mins. We recommend that reflective clothing is worn during the winter evening runs.

Showers are available at the Sports Hall and many runners stay for a drink and a chat in the bar (some just skip the run and head straight for the bar!). In addition, members often arrange to meet up on Sunday mornings for longer runs. It's always easier to force yourself out of the door when you know a fellow runner is doing the same. During the summer evenings we occasionally meet up at village pubs around Leicestershire and Rutland for runs along splendid country roads, bridleways, and footpaths, sometimes incorporating club events such as handicap races.

Competition
And if you really get hooked, then competitive running may be the thing for you. The club competes in the Leicestershire Road Running League (LRRL), which comprises five winter races (January to March) and six summer races (June to September) over distances ranging from 5 miles to half marathon. The LRRL races are hosted by running clubs around Leicestershire, in 2006 our Chris Ingram memorial 10K featured as the final race. Of course, there are many other races around the UK that our runners compete in throughout the year. Over the winter we compete in the Derby Runner Cross Country League to give our runners the option of a more challenging alternative to the usual winter road running.

Membership
The club is affiliated to England Athletics with the membership year running from 1 April to 31 March. All members and volunteers must be registered. Should you wish to join the Striders, senior membership (below) entitles you to:
