Cavey Imagine my wife's delight as we're wondering around the beautiful town of Wesport, Co. Mayo, on Christmas Eve, when I see a poster advertising a 5k race in the town on St. Stephen's Day (Boxing Day). Luckily i'd bought my running kit against a considerable amount of pressure from 'her indoors'. Ordinarily it wouldn't have been too much of an issue but the cottage we are staying in is on an island 5 miles from Westport, neither of us drive, and the island is only accessible at low tide. See you can see why she may have been slightly annoyed at the prospect of getting up at 6am for a 10 mile round trek!! Anyway, as for the race. It was a small field of maybe 50-60. Half of whom were doing it as a walk rather than a run. There was a bit of confusion at the start, but once underway it was a nice flat course past Westport House around the Quay and back. I was surprised with my time as I hadn't had the usual race preparations (I don't think 8 cans of Guiness the night before counts!) And I had my highest ever race placing of 15th (ok there were only probably about 25-30 people running, but thats not what I need to tell my mates!!)
