St. Patrick's Athletics Club - Malta

About The Club

About St. Patrick's Athletics Club
Our Roots
The club originated from the Salesian School of St. Patrick’s in Sliema and was officially founded in 1962 by Fr. Alan Murray. In 1964 Fr. Lawrence Essery, who today is Honorary President, took over and managed the club for over 30 years. Throughout these years the club has grown continuously, and has always been in the forefront of the Maltese athletic scene.

St. Patrick's AC Today
The club today boasts of over 300 members, including some of the finest athletes in Malta. We have the likes of Jonathan Balzan, Michael Gellel, Clive Gerada, Giselle Camilleri, Carmen Hili and many others who are prominent on the Maltese athletic scene. These and other top athletes, as well as our veterans, land St Patrick's a good share of the individual and most team honours in Maltese road races. But, apart from this, we are also extremely proud of our numerous members who provide a green and yellow setting to all Maltese races by means of sheer massive participation.

Our Races
St Patrick’s AC hosts the prestigious annual Dingli 10 (a ten mile race), which is held each 19th March, the Birzebbuga 10km, and Gudja 8km race in October. All activities also include junior races and a fun run for the whole family.

Our Newsletter
The club’s newsletter, The Shamrock, is issued on a quarterly basis. It contains athletics news, information about upcoming events, coaching tips, a running calendar with dates of races, the traditional Sunday club run schedule and other information such as club social activities, as well as articles of interest for athletes in general.

The Clubhouse
For many years the club had dreamed of having its own clubhouse. This dream came true when the Malta Sports Council allotted us the old Gudja Bowls Pitch. After refurbishment, the St. Patrick’s AC clubhouse was officially inaugurated by the Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Education, the Hon. Jesmond Mugliett, on Saturday 25th November 2000.

Social activities
St Patrick’s AC members and their families and friends take an enthusiastic part in pre-race Pasta Nights, summer barbecues, day excursions to Comino, a wine-tasting competition, and the Christmas dinner, during which all bonuses and trophies are awarded.

The Future
The Saint Patrick’s Athletic Club’s aim for the future is to remain in the forefront of the Maltese athletic scene, while endeavouring to enhance its membership, both in quality and quantity. This will in turn promote athletics on a national scale, for the general benefit of the Maltese people’s health and lifestyle.

We firmly believe that athletics is a way of life!
