Notes & Comments

Great Eastern Run (Peterborough half Marathon).

I wanted to run a flat race after running such a hilly Ipswich half. Strangely, it would have been nice to have run a hill or two just to alter my running style a bit!

I ran the first few miles a bit slower this time, in fact, it seemed to take me about 6 miles to really get into it, I had no support from people I knew at this race (although there was an amazing amount of support around the course, it's a big race) and since Ipswich Half was my main focus, I did go through a bit of CBA. But as we headed towards the halfway point, there was such a great atmosphere, I started to believe in myself and probably for the first time ever, I actually enjoyed the second half of a (half marathon) race :-)

I'm happy that I maintained an ok pace throughout, and that I managed to maintain that in the final miles, and didn't feel that I wanted to give up at any point, which is a first. I actually felt I had more to give at the end, which leads me to think that I ran too conservatively, that I could have pushed the pace more. I think I just need to gain more experience at this distance, with more longer runs and speedwork (which I've neglected).

Only annoyance was my garmin data thingy was full, so I had to try and delete some runs on the go so I had space, I couldn't have run the whole race without my garmin!

I guess a flat half (with hils in training) and starting slower made all the difference. I kept myself going better than usual and it helped that it was a race with 4000+ runners as there was loads of people to run with. Also, the course didn't have any long empty stretches of road, there were always corners to turn. I'll definately be back next year :-)
