DANBERT Absolutely loved it.

I know it wasn't a fell race but there was enough climbing and off road in it to make it a hard enough test for me.

Got caught in a lot of bottle-necks at the stiles, but that's the same for everyone so no complaints.

When we got to the little river crossing i'd had it ''survival mode'' set in. All i wanted to do was get to the finish.

I'd definitely have a go at this again though. The course was a single 7 mile lap over the farmland across the 3 hills around Parbold, Lancashire, incorporating narrow tracks, steep hills, stiles, ditches, walls, and everything you need for a proper race. A true multi-terrain race. We started at the school in Hilldale and followed the road through the village for about a mile then took a lane off to the left which turned into a steep rough track. We followed this skirting round the edge of a quarry until we came out part way up Hunters Hill. We then turned right for a short road section, then right again to begin a long descent through fields that brought us out further along the road that we started on. We then turned left and left again to emerge on the main road that comes off the M6 near the bottom of Parbold Hill. We then gasped our way up to the Wiggin Tree at the top and just after the pub turned left and followed the farm tracks and paths through muddy fields that brought us out near the High Moor restaurant. We went past this and turned left along a long drive which we left when it started to bend left and followed the more muddy paths to the ruined windmill at the top of Harrock Hill. We then followed the edge of the trees past the windmill and trundled down through the fields to the finish at the school.

I really enjoyed this event. It’s probably about a third on road, two thirds off road, but you couldn’t call it a fell race.(nor could you apply that description to the Harrock Hill race in my opinion, which covers much the same ground minus the road bits).
